Summer Study Abroad Recap: Students Travel to Rome, Chile, and Japan
This summer, students visited Rome, Chile, and Japan as part of the CU Denver Global Education program. These opportunities for international study provide students with immersive experiences, introducing them to cultures and perspectives that they will carry with them throughout their lives and careers.

CAP Centennial Celebration
Did you know?
Illinois was the first state to license architects in 1897. The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) was founded in 1919 to promote uniform national licensing standards and facilitate reciprocal practice across state lines.
Professional licensure for landscape architecture began in 1953 when California enacted the nation's first title act. Colorado established licensure in 1967; sunset the regulation in 1976; and then re-established it in 2007 following an extended period without state regulation.
Professional planning licensure began in 1962 when New Jersey enacted the nation’s first planning licensing law. Colorado does not license planners, instead relying on voluntary national certification through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), professional experience, and accredited educational programs.
Urban design and historic preservation do not have standalone professional licensure requirements in the United States. Practitioners generally rely on education, professional experience, certifications, or credentials from related fields.

Alumni and friends of the University Technical Assistance Program (UTAP) and Colorado Center of Community Development (CCCD), including special guests from the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), enjoyed an evening of camaraderie and connection commemorating CAP's Centennial Celebration, honoring 100 years of built environment education in Colorado, on July 31, 2026.
Congratulations to graduate student Anastasia Rezvova (M.Arch 27) whose Soundscape Pavilion competition entry received an honorable mention in the Museum of Outdoor Arts (MOA) 2026 Design and Build Competition, “Soundscapes in Structure." Undergraduate and graduate students in architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, and related design disciplines were invited to envision an innovative performance pavilion for MOA’s Marjorie Park in Greenwood Village, Colorado.
Assistant Professor Louise Cheetham Bordelon coordinated a graphic design competition pitting master of landscape architecture students' creative talents against artificial intelligence that culminated in a charrette and presentation to Chancellor Kenneth T. Christensen on August 24, 2026.
As of August 2026, Danny Wills has transferred from a teaching-track faculty position to join tenure-track faculty as an assistant professor in the Department of Architecture. Congratulations, Danny, on this well-deserved milestone in your career.
Assistant Professor Shirley Dongwei Chen and Maria Espinoza presented "Wall Talks" on behalf of their practice DoZa at the Practices in Research#7 Un-disclosed: Exposing the Dirty Documents, the Controverses and the Confession, the Back-site of Design Processes in Architecture, a peer-reviewed, practice-based architectural research conference and lecture event held in Brussels, Belgium.

| Welcome, Jocelyn Beausire, Assistant Professor of Architecture
|
Jocelyn Beausire (she/they) is a researcher, writer, performance artist, and designer originally from rural Wisconsin. Her work explores embodied action as a form of critical spatial practice and an emergent tool in the design process through a feminist, queer, and ruralizing lens. Jocelyn carries a Master of Architecture from Princeton University, where she received a certificate in Media and Modernity and was awarded the Suzanne Kolarik Underwood Prize for her thesis on maintenance sheds. She also holds a double Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Architecture Studies and Music Performance from the University of Washington in Seattle. Her design and performance work has been featured nationally and internationally by FLUX Factory, Westbeth Gallery, Glasshouse, YellowFish Performance Festival, ChaNorth Artist Residency, La Wayaka Artist Residency, Base Experimental Arts and Space, and SOIL Gallery. Beausire has practiced with LTL Architects in New York City, NY, Besler + Sons in Hopewell, NJ, and Schemata Workshop in Seattle, WA.

| Welcome, Shawn Lutz, Assistant Professor of Architecture
|
Shawn Lutz (he/him) joins CU Denver following previous teaching roles at Rice University, Texas A&M University, and the University of Houston. His work investigates housing, architectural typology, and the relationships among formal, regulatory, material, and urban systems. He is particularly interested in how constrained sites, development regulations, geometry, and graphic operations can generate new propositions for collective living, and how construction, representation, and making can serve as instruments of architectural inquiry. He has served as an invited critic at Pratt Institute, the University of Pennsylvania, and the IE School of Architecture and Design in Madrid. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston and a Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Shawn is also the director of Lutz Office, a Houston and Denver based practice for architectural projects, research, drawings, writing, and exhibitions. He brings more than a decade of professional experience in Houston, New York, and Chicago, with work spanning residential, institutional, urban, exhibition, and graphic projects.

The Design/HEALth exhibition, currently on view at the Fulginiti Gallery on the Anschutz campus, showcases work by students from the College of Architecture and Planning at CU Denver and the Department of Environmental Design at CU Boulder. Alongside the exhibition, the Fall 2026 Design/HEALth Speaker Series, starting September 9, brings together design and health professionals who are elevating environmental, urban, and architectural design to improve the health and wellbeing of people and the planet.
You're invited to the opening of Professor Jody Beck's solo gallery show titled Texture and Other Forms of Beauty, which will include both ceramics and prints, at CORE Art Space. Join us for A Good Idea: Drawings in the Making, an exhibition opening and roundtable moderated by Assistant Professor Sarah Hearne and featuring Paul Anderson, Shirley Chen, Morgane Copp, Claire Glass, Kevin Hirth, Alex Yeuyan Li, and Rick Sommerfeld. The roundtable marks the opening of the first part of this two-part exhibition, and raises the question about what is at stake in making and interpreting drawings in architectural practices today. Stop by the Common Ground Community Design Project Reception to view design projects by CU Denver architecture students and celebrate the inaugural Common Ground Community Design Festival, co-curated by Leyuan Li, assistant professor at the CU Denver College of Architecture and Planning, and the Denver Mayor's Office. The festival is also presented as part of Doors Open Denver, organized by the Denver Architecture Foundation.
