Description: 
Images are everywhere. Creating images is fun and easy! Anyone can take a picture, but the best artists and designers need to do more than simply point and click. Students need skills, but they also should think critically about the way images impact viewers—and the world. In Architecture Photography, we will work on both skill-building AND critical thinking.

The Architecture of Fun

Description:  
What makes a place fun? How can play inform design? Where have we hidden the history of fun architecture?

In this course, you will learn about playful spaces from homes to amusement parks, restaurants to campers, and more. Along the way, you will discover the underlying principles of the architecture of fun, develop a new design vocabulary, and explore having fun with your designs.

Patterns: Studies in Repetition

Description:  

This course will dive deep into the joys of pattern design, using analog and digital techniques to develop and play with two-dimensional and three-dimensional rhythmic systems. We will investigate the value of repetition, we will create methods of adaptability, and we will explore applications. We will study the role of repetitive patterning in architecture and how it shows up at every scale from textile to urban planning, in decoration, organization, structure, and construction.

Refining, Reworking, Remaking: 2024 Summer Portfolio Workshop

Description: This elective presents a distinctive platform for students to hone their skills in enhancing the representation of their design work while crafting a comprehensive portfolio to prepare for academic and professional applications.

Over the course of eight weeks, the elective will provide students with lectures, workshops, and desk critiques to navigate the process of refining their design work, exploring novel perspectives, and elevating their visual narratives. Furthermore, students will delve into the intricacies of portfolio-making, discovering various techniques to curate an impactful assemblage of work that showcases their design skills and visions.

Furniture Design

Description: 
Learn how to design and build furniture in the College of Architecture and Planning's woodshop. Topics include ergonomics, properties of materials, principles and techniques of joinery, and techniques of hand and machine tools.

The Furniture Design course meets two times per week in the woodshop. Design issues and theory are presented in readings, demonstrations, class assignments, and critiques. Students work in the classroom, the lab, the woodshop, and outside of class on individual design and analysis assignments.

Beginning Revit

Description:
An introduction to Building Information Modeling through Autodesk's Revit Architecture software. The course explores fundamental architectural concepts as they are developed and expressed in Revit. Emphasis is placed on program use as it pertains to producing both scholastic and professional models and drawing sets.

Film and the City

Description:
The parallel formations of cinema and the Modern Metropolis by the turn of the 19th century affected a radical social, cultural, and perceptual shift. This course investigates the ways in which the emerging urban fabric of the metropolis and the aesthetics of the newly invented art of film simultaneously and inseparably influenced one another. 

While the appearance of the modern city served as one of the main themes in early 19th-century films, the cinematic gaze was conspicuously responsible for the shaping of the modern metropolis' aesthetics. This intersection introduced not only new modes of viewing the ordinary but also—and more importantly—a collapse of the experience of time and space. The implications of this collision —and the dominant role it played in the rearrangement of both subject's mental life and the public space— will serve as the core of our study.
