University of Colorado Denver Urban and Regional Planning professor Jennifer Steffel Johnson recently spoke on a Denver Design Week panel, The Future of Equality: Designing Affording Housing in the Face of Climate Change, which explored how affordable housing needs to evolve in the coming decades to adapt to climate change. The panel was covered in a Denverite article, "Experts advise taking a lot of small steps on the path to housing built for climate change."
During the panel, Steffel Johnson recommended a variety of strategies to increase the supply of affordable housing such as changing zoning to allow accessory dwelling units, duplexes, and townhomes in more neighborhoods. “We can make a difference,” said Steffel Johnson, who focuses on affordable housing. “And small differences can accumulate to make bigger differences.” The discussion among Steffel Johnson and the other panelists covered the need for compact, walkable neighborhoods; innovations in the construction industry such as modular housing and construction site robots that could bring down construction costs; and how to use green space to maximize energy and water efficiency.
