Design Fabrication Lab

Students have access to our extensive Design Fabrication Lab (DFL) which houses a full scale furniture-making shop, model-making tools, a spray booth and four laser cutters.All students must complete appropriate training before they may access the DFL.

The Design Fabrication Lab (DFL) includes:

  • 1000 SF 24 Hour Bench Space for assembly and temporary wood storage,
  • 24 Hour Explosion-proof spray booth,
  • 700 SF Digital Fabrication Lab that houses four 150 watt lasers (one large format),
  • 1,500 SF Woodworking Machine Lab.

The Design Fabrication Lab is staffed by student employees during the day and well into the evening to assist in the set-up and processing of your model parts.

The 1500-square-foot Machine Room houses the bulk of the woodworking machines the DFL has to offer.

Students are required to complete mandatory Safety Training conducted only at the beginning of each semester. Once a student has completed the necessary training, access to the facilities and resources will be at your disposal.

The College of Architecture and Planning has a 5-AXIS CNC Router. The machine has a 5’x10’ bed, 8 tool changer, dual vacuum hold-down pumps and a 14” Z-clearance. Students are required to attend a workshop prior to using the CNC machine.

Students are required to complete all woodshop training and attend a workshop prior to using the metal tools.

CNC, Laser, and 3D Print Job Submission

Step 1: Take the PaperCut training under computing through canvas

**Step 2a: (only if off campus) Connect to the CU VPN

Step 2b: In order to submit DIGITAL files for 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC routing and CNC plasma using papercut please use the following link:

Step 3:Drop off flat material in Laser Lab for Laser Files or Annex for CNC and store it on the racks with your name.  

Step 4: Be patient (typical turn around time is 3 days for most files to be checked and toolpathed). A lab monitor will reach out through papercut with questions and to create an appointment for you to come in for the milling process.  

Step 5: notifications will be sent through PaperCut when the lab communicates with you. 

Step 6: After milling or cutting is complete on the CNC collect your produced parts, discard any waste and clean up the mess from your mill/plasma. For laser and 3d print just come pick up when notified.

**NOTE**
If you are off-campus you will need to log in to the CU VPN before accessing PaperCut.
