ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS IN DENVER’S HISTORIC DISTRICTS

BRADY HEATH The Landmarks and Preservation Department at the City and County of Denver is updating their Design Guidelines for Denver Landmarks and Historic Districts document. The City of Denver updated their zoning code in June of 2023, making it easier to build accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in the city. The Landmarks and Preservation staff has seen 55 applications to build an ADU since 2019, and the number is expected to increase in the coming years. The addition of an ADU chapter in the updated design guidelines document will give people guidance on how to design an ADU to be subordinate and compatible in Denver’s historic districts. This project looks at different scenarios of ADU form and massing behind primary structures.
The Mosaic of Habitat

Cultivating Livable Cities by Promoting a Mosaic of Biodiverse Habitat in the Urban Landscape

Mika Keydel The primary objective of this project is to investigate pioneering approaches to improving biodiversity and ecosystem health within urban environments. By highlighting the efforts of other jurisdictions and introducing forward-thinking concepts, the project aims to prioritize biodiversity and ecosystem health as essential components of Denver's urban development plan. The case studies underscore the significance of collaborative governance and small-scale interventions in establishing cities that are sustainable, resilient, and livable. These recommendations are poised to contribute to a series of key city initiatives, including the upcoming comprehensive plan update, amendments to landscape regulations, and the Healthy River Corridor project.
Evolution of Retail: Redevelopment Strategies

Evolution of Retail

Allie McGahee The Evolution of Retail is a project in collaboration with the City of Boulder that seeks to set a vision for redevelopment of underutilized commercial shopping centers throughout the city, through envisioning ways in which the City can work towards establishing vibrant mixed-use neighborhoods. A site planning exercise was completed in which an analysis was conducted to look at various market patterns, demographics, and area context within an underutilized, existing, medium-sized commercial development area within the city as a testing model. The project report outlined exercise results and provided visual representations that contextualize and describe key findings.

Comprehensive Park and Trail Foundation Analysis

Othman Ktiri In collaboration with the City of Evans, student Othman Ktiri is developing a baseline analysis to lay the foundation for a comprehensive park and recreation plan, crucial as the existing plan hasn't changed since 2000. This initiative aims to address current gaps and anticipate future needs, emphasizing community engagement and inclusivity. Evans' park system, managed by the Parks and Recreation Department, includes various offerings like neighborhood parks, Riverside Park, and a Historical Museum, reflecting a commitment to catering to diverse needs. However, issues such as graffiti, gang activity, and squatting tarnish the parks' appeal, deterring citizens and limiting their utilization. A comprehensive update to the Parks, Trails, and Recreation Master Plan is essential to accommodate the city's growth, new spaces, and changing demographics while effectively addressing emerging challenges. This strategic revision is vital for fostering community engagement, ensuring safety, and maximizing the positive impact of parks and trails on Evans residents' overall well-being.
