Alex Yueyan Li

Assistant Professor

Alex Yueyan Li is co-principal of 11x17, a design practice based in Toronto and Denver. Works undertaken by 11x17 explore architecture’s material politics, approaching building construction as a conceptual device to engage larger issues around resources, labor, and form. Experientially rich and economically accessible, 11x17’s speculative and built projects have appeared in North America and China. Ongoing projects include an exhibition on material remnants, a building about leanness, and a book focused on the extended lives of existing buildings.

Prior to establishing his practice, Alex worked internationally in the United States, Canada, Japan, and China, including Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Höweler + Yoon, Millions, and Shigeru Ban Architects. He has led architecture and art installation projects in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Shanghai, Taipei, and France. This includes leading the award-winning renovation of I.M. Pei’s Everson Museum, where he collaborated with ceramicists, conservationists, and contractors to develop material research and adaptive reuse strategies specific to the building scale.

Alex has held teaching positions at Harvard University and Syracuse University. He is a recipient of the 2021-22 Irving Innovation Fellowship at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he co-launched the “All About This One Thing” program. He has also lectured and served on juries at institutions such as Harvard, Cornell, SCI-Arc, Ohio State University, University of Toronto, RISD, UIC, and Washington University in St. Louis. His work has been published globally and featured in PLAT, E-flux, Archinect, New York Review of Architecture, DesignTO, AZURE, and ACADIA. At CU Denver, Alex teaches design studios and seminars on building construction and reuse.

Alex received a Master of Architecture I AP with Distinction from Harvard GSD, where he was the recipient of the Clifford Wong Housing Prize and the Architecture Research Grant. He also holds a Bachelor of Architectural Studies with Distinction from the University of Waterloo, Canada, where he received the President’s Scholarship and the First in Class Award.
