CAP's PhD 2020 Update
The PhD in Geography, Planning, and Design has some exciting news to share!
May 8, 2020First, three of our students successfully defended their dissertations this semester and will become professors in universities around the world:
Dr. Nermeen Dalgamoni
Dr. Nermeen Dalgamoni will become an Assistant Professor in the College of Architecture and Design at Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid, Jordan. Her dissertation was supervised by Professor Jody Beck and was entitled “Food Sovereignty in the Arab World: Understanding Smallholder Farmers Empowerment through Regional Collaborative Strategies.”
Dr. Mohammed Bay
Dr. Mohhammed Bay will start as an Assistant Professor in the Heritage Management Department at King Saud in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His dissertation was supervised by Professor Chris Koziol and was entitled “The Sacred City Assemblage: A Study of the Value-Based Preservation & Heritage Production Process of the Sacred City of Al-Madinah.”
Dr. Mohammed Alnaim
Dr. Mohammed Alnaim will become an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Ha’il in Ha’il, Saudi Arabia. His dissertation work was supervised by Professor Emeritus Mark Gelernter and was entitled “Searching for Urban and Architectural Core Forms in the Traditional Najdi Built Environment of the Central Region of Saudi Arabia.”
In addition, eight new students will begin the program in fall 2020:
Amy DePierre completed her MS in Environmental Science from the University of Colorado Denver and a BA in Psychology and Biology from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She will be supervised by Professor Bryan Wee and will focus her studies on sustainable urban food systems.
Danielle “Dani” Slabaugh received an MLA from Cal Poly, Pomona and a BA from Hampshire College. She will be supervised by Professors Jeremy Németh and Gregory Simon and will focus her studies on race and environmental justice in marginalized communities.
Darcy Kitching received a BA in English and an MURP from the University of Colorado Denver and an M.Ed. from Loyola University Maryland. She will be supervised by Professor Carrie Makarewicz and will focus her studies on the experience of children and families in the built environment.
Hillary Quarles received a BA in English from Yale University and an MLA from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She will be supervised by Professors Jeremy Németh and Gregory Simon and will focus her studies on urban green infrastructure and community food systems.
Jennifer Newcomer received a BA in Environmental Design from the University of New Mexico and a MURP from the University of Colorado Denver. She will be supervised by Professor Bryan Wee and will focus her studies on children’s participation in urban decision-making.
Jonathan Burton received a BS in Geology from Brigham Young University and a MS in Interdisciplinary Science from the University of Colorado Denver. He will be supervised by Professor Frederick Chambers and will focus his studies on the effects of climate change and glacial melt on downstream communities.
Ryanne Ototivo received a BS in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt University and a Master of City and Regional Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. She will be supervised by Professor Carrie Makarewicz and Manish Shirgaokar and will focus her studies on the intersection of transportation and childhood.
Shelley McMullen received a BS in Civil Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and an MURP from the University of Colorado Denver. She will be supervised by Professor Andrew Rumbach and will focus her studies on disaster planning and community resilience.
