Lamar Station Classroom for Urban Farming, a project of the Design Build certificate program Colorado Building Workshop, was awarded a 2017 IDEAS2 Award by the American Institute of Steel Construction for excellence in building design using structural steel. The award was presented at an informal ceremony at the classroom site in Lakewood, Colorado, on August 18, 2017. The project is featured among this year’s recipients in the May issue of AISC’s Modern Steel Construction magazine and in a video about the 2017 recipients. In the spring of 2014, 16 students under the direction of Rick Sommerfeld, assistant professor of architecture and director of the Design Build certificate program, worked with Metro West Housing Solutions, the City of Lakewood’s housing authority, to design and build the Lamar Station Classroom. Its mission is to educate residents of the nearby transit-oriented development about urban farming while simultaneously providing space for environmental education and other youth programs.
